Gastric Sleeve

Stop struggling to control your weight. If you are searching for an effective way to improve your health, and life, metabolic surgery is the most powerful option with incredible outcomes. If you've reached a point where you need a more effective tool, gastric sleeve surgery is often the safest, most preferred treatment. The surgeons at Texas Center for Bariatrics & Advanced Surgery in Plano, TX, have completed more than 16,000 bariatric procedures.

What Is Gastric Sleeve Surgery?

The gastric sleeve or vertical sleeve gastrectomy (VSG) procedure is a type of bariatric surgery that involves the removal of a portion of the stomach through a small button hole incision. It is also the most common bariatric surgery around the world. Dr. Cribbins and Dr. Chen perform this procedure with the ultra-minimally invasive da Vinci® Xi surgical system. The stomach is separated into two sections, the smaller of which resembles the shape and size of a banana, leaving a small tube or "sleeve" remaining. After this area is sectioned off, the larger portion of the stomach is removed, leaving 15 to 20 percent remaining.

Removing 80 percent of the stomach significantly restricts caloric intake. In addition, the portion of the stomach that is removed secretes ghrelin and other "hunger hormones" that are responsible for appetite. By removing this part of the stomach, the patient's appetite is reduced further, significantly contributing to weight loss. This surgery is a metabolic surgery and also causes further changes in hormones that lead a patient to feel fuller faster.

The Benefits of Gastric Sleeve Surgery One Operation Can Change Your Life

Decreased Appetite

Did you know that the size of the stomach is reduced by up to 80 percent during gastric sleeve surgery and the hunger hormone ghrelin is blunted? Ghrelin is mainly produced in the portion of the stomach that was removed. As a result, you won't feel as hungry and you will feel fuller faster. These two simple changes can have a dramatic impact on your waistline, promoting rapid and lasting weight loss.

Impressive Safety Record

This minimally invasive weight loss surgery has an excellent safety record. According to a study from the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, less than 1 percent of these bariatric surgery patients experience complications 30 days after surgery. We use advanced methods and tools to further decrease the already low risk of complications during this type of weight loss surgery.

Effective Treatment

Many patients experience great results with this technique in under 12 months, losing about 90 percent of their excess body weight. In fact, this procedure is so effective that many patients who previously underwent a gastric band procedure undergo revision surgery to gastric sleeve.

Improved Health

Many patients find that health problems related to obesity such as sleep apnea, arthritis, and diabetes get better or resolve completely after losing weight with this technique. You might find exercising more comfortable as you begin to feel lighter and more mobile, further solidifying your commitment to leading a healthier lifestyle.

Better Quality of Life

Overall, you can expect an improved quality of life because you can engage in more physical tasks, and feel more confident in your appearance and ability to participate in social activities. Often, weight loss surgery can give you the boost you need to be more productive and successful in other areas of your life such as dating or career advancement.

We Can Help You Live the Life You Want

Many overweight people don't experience long-term weight loss success with traditional weight loss methods of diet and exercise due to leptin resistance. Sometimes, people need to take another path, such as bariatric surgery. Gastric sleeve surgery works because it reduces the size of your stomach and decreases the hunger hormone ghrelin. It can also reset your metabolism, offering you long-term results that diet and exercise alone can't accomplish.

How Fast Will I Lose Weight?

The First Couple of Months

Patients see excellent weight loss results in the first couple of months after surgery with rapid weight loss and then it slows after the first year. Like gastric bypass or any other type of weight loss surgery, it is important to remember that you will shed more pounds at the beginning of your journey.

Long-Term Results

Most patients can expect to lose 90 percent of their excess weight 12 months after gastric sleeve surgery. The rate at which you lose weight, as well as the amount you lose, depends on your diet, exercise level, and body. By staying committed to a healthy lifestyle, you can expect to see long-term results that promote weight loss, refine your body, and improve your health.

A Closer Look at a Patient's Story  Kim's Gastric Sleeve Journey

We all know how difficult it can be to lose weight through diet and exercise. Our patient, Kim, is no stranger to counting calories, adopting strict exercise routines, and even hiring personal trainers. Still, the scale wouldn't budge.

Once she hit 275 lbs, this Plano mother could feel herself slipping away—she was no longer who she wanted to be for herself and her children. She knew it was time to consider bariatric surgery. She chose Dr. Cribbins for her gastric sleeve surgery because he truly understood her situation and didn't judge. He just wanted to help her move forward with a healthier life.

Just 10 months after her sleeve gastrectomy, Kim was down 112 lbs, going from a size 22 to a size 4/6. She now genuinely enjoys healthier foods, no longer has cravings to binge eat, and is proud to be able to teach her daughters how to have a healthy relationship with food.

“Quality of life surprises happen post-procedure that people aren’t even thinking about. You eat a small amount of food and feel full. Surgery changes the relationship a person has with food and helps them make healthier choices for a better future.” Dr. Cribbins

Exploring Your Candidacy for Sleeve Gastrectomy

Unlike some other practices, our Plano bariatrics office does not put limits on patients. Everyone deserves a healthy weight and a long life—and that is exactly what weight loss surgery delivers. We are supportive and compassionate surgeons who do not judge. You could be a great candidate if you:

Have Certain Medical Conditions

Weight-related medical conditions like obstructive sleep apnea, high blood pressure, and Type 2 diabetes can be alleviated with bariatric surgery. If you have a weight-related medical condition, you could be a great candidate for treatment.

Are in Good Overall Health

Aside from your weight, you should be in good overall health before receiving a gastric sleeve in Plano, TX. Though we use minimally invasive techniques, you will still have a healing period after surgery. Being in good overall health and not smoking will help you experience an easier recovery.

Have a BMI of 27 or Higher

Many patients fear they don't weigh enough to justify bariatric surgery, but if you have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 27 or greater, you most likely DO qualify.

Why Choose Sleeve Gastrectomy  Instead of Gastric Bypass?

Gastric sleeve and gastric bypass surgery are two of the most common bariatric surgeries. When compared to gastric bypass surgery, sleeve gastrectomy is generally considered a less invasive, lower-risk bariatric option. In addition, patients can undergo this procedure to improve their health, and then proceed with gastric bypass in the future if they don't meet their weight loss goals.

The surgeons at Texas Center for Bariatrics & Advanced Surgery in Plano, TX, offer gastric bypass, gastric sleeve, and other bariatric procedures; rest assured we will make recommendations on treatments that match your needs and goals.
