Duodenal Switch

Losing weight and keeping it off can be a challenge, but being overweight can both shorten your life and decrease your quality of life.

Duodenal switch is a weight loss surgery that can help severely obese patients lose more weight than gastric bypass or sleeve gastrectomy.

What Is a
Duodenal Switch?

Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch, also known as BPD-DS, is a bariatric surgery option that combines a gastric sleeve with the rearrangement of the small intestine to both limit the number of calories the body can absorb and to lower the amount of food the patient requires to feel full. This surgery is both restrictive and malabsorptive, leading to highly effective weight loss. Biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch is reserved for patients with a BMI of 40 and greater.  Patients must take vitamins for life to maintain proper health.

This weight loss surgery allows patients to achieve more dramatic weight loss results than sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass alone.

An Under-Utilized Procedure The Most Powerful Weight Loss Surgery

According to the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, there were only 5,525 BPD-DS performed in 2021. This is despite its immense success rate. A study of super-obese patients published in the peer-reviewed journal Obesity Surgery showed that duodenal switch patients achieved more weight loss than those who received a gastric bypass.

Understanding the Classic Duodenal Switch Procedure

What To Expect During Your Procedure In Plano

Our Plano practice exclusively uses the ultra minimally invasive Da Vinci Xi® surgical system for faster healing, less scarring, and better results.

Day of Procedure

Our Plano practice exclusively uses the ultra minimally invasive Da Vinci Xi® surgical system for faster healing, less scarring, and better results.

Anesthesia

You will first be placed under general anesthesia so you're comfortably unconscious throughout your procedure.

Incisions

Dr. Cribbins or Dr. Chen, your bariatric surgeon, will make a few small incisions along your abdomen that he will use to insert a small surgical camera and surgical tools.

Create Gastric Sleeve

Your surgeon will turn your stomach into a gastric sleeve, giving it the appearance of a banana-sized tube. A gastric sleeve removes about 80 percent of the stomach, significantly reducing the amount of food you'll be able to consume.

Bypass Small Intestine

Your bariatric surgeon will then close off the middle section of your small intestine and attach the end section to the duodenum near the stomach. This will lower the number of calories your body absorbs.

Biliopancreatic Diversion

The middle portion of the small intestine is then connected to the end section of the small intestine, so bile and pancreatic digestive juices can flow into this part of the intestine.

Close Incisions

Drs. Cribbins and Chen then will remove the surgical instruments and close your incisions so you can begin your recovery.

Alternative Procedures Simpler Than Duodenal Switch with incredible results

Single Anastomosis Duodenal Switch (SADI)

Commonly Referred to as Sleeve Enhancement Surgery

SADI-S surgery is a type of duodenal switch that involves a sleeve gastrectomy and the rearrangement of the small intestine. It is a simplified version of the classic BPD-DS procedure. SADI bypasses only 60% to 75% of the small bowel and has only one connection to the intestine, resulting in fewer complications.

This is a great primary surgery and a good option if you did not achieve desired weight loss goals after a vertical sleeve gastrectomy.

The SADI-S is a great weight loss surgery option in lieu of a gastric bypass as patients do NOT experience unpleasant dumping syndrome.

Omega Loop or Mini-Gastric Bypass

The omega loop, also known as single anastomosis gastric bypass and mini-gastric bypass, is another kind of bariatric procedure that creates a small, elongated pouch out of the stomach from which the rest of the stomach is permanently divided. Like SADI, this technique requires only one connection, which makes the procedure easier to perform and involves fewer risks.

Dr. Cribbins and Dr. Chen can help determine which bariatric surgery will be best for you during your consultation in Plano, TX.
